Aditya Kerketta left his job and returned to horticulture farming

Case History Of Aditya Kerketta

Today’s youths are leaving agriculture and moving towards government service and other non farming sectors for occupation where as aditya sets an example as a Farmer. Aditya left his highly salaried Tata Steel plant’s technical assistant job to pursue agriculture farm as his profession. Five years ago under the influence of nabard’s wadi project and the help of sgup organization, Aditya choose agriculture farming as his occupation .Aditya’s home is in Bijaghat village of Talahali Gram panchayat of lahunipada block of Sundargarh district of Odisha . His small family comprises of his wife, 2 sons and his mother. From his school life he has a desire for a government job. Aditya did his intermediate from Rourkela and went to Baripada for technical education. After that he joined Bhusan steel plant. He worked there for eight years before he got a job at Tata steel plant. There he was getting 25000 rupees monthly salary. He was living in Tata with his wife and children. His children were studying in a good School.
Meanwhile Aditya has 10 acres of land in his village and approximately 8 acres of land was Barron and deserted. 2 acres of agricultural land was given as leased for paddy crops. He was coming once a month to look after His mother who was living alone in village. Whenever he comes to village he used to see his farming land. He has a special attraction towards his village, its lands, gardens and forests. He was very fond of horticulture so he planted some mango trees in his dry land .in the year 2011 Aditya came to know about NABARD’s wadi project through SGUP organization’s awareness and various programs for farmers and subsequently he applied for Horticulture farming. After that he got help from the organization and he started cultivating mango, Litchi and Kaju trees in his one acre land. As he was working in Tata he employed a staff to take care of his horticulture. Gradually, Aditya was becoming more interested in agri-business. His Khandadhar land was very suitable for horticulture farming like Mango, Cashew nut (Kaju), leechi (lichu), etc. The main crops are Banana, papaya, pulses and different vegetables which yields more productions. He was always thinking about how he could utilize his 8 Acre land for horticulture farming to get rid of his hectic and displeasure service job life. He was high hope to generate more income out of Agri-business. He was free to return his village as his children are completed their basic education and got admission for higher education in other place. He discussed with his family about his decision to return village and also explained how his service job was unable to fulfill to pay rouse rent and other expenses. He also explains how horticulture farming would benefit his family for food and money security. In the year 2014 he left his job and returned to his village ‘Barghat’ for Agri-business.
First he made chain link fencing around the orchard . Then he dug one borewell for irrigation to the entire farming land through pipes and pumps. His prior knowledge about Govt. Schemes has brought him various helps from District Agriculture Dept, State Entreprenuer Dept, Water irrigation Dept, ITDA, etc. Now Aditya has Mango, Leechi, Cashew nut (Kaju), , Lemon, Shaguan tree, etc type of more than 500 trees in his land. Mango production have started from existing 30 Mango trees. Availability of water irrigation has enabled him to do three times seasonal vegetable cultivation crops in a year. Aditya cultivates market oriented vegetables. Mustard, Pulses, Potatoes crops are also done. Winter seasonal potato, bringal and green matar cultivation are more beneficial. Every week he sends vegetable and other items to Khu gaon and Lahunipada weekly Market. From agri-business he earns 1.5-2 lakh rupees anually. According to Aditya Agri-business is a sustainable occupation. Now a days big entrepreneurs are investing huge amount in Agri-business and taking huge profits out of it like a corporate. Due to lack of knowledge and skills farmers are not getting adequate benefits. In States like Andhra Pradesh and Kerala farmers are getting handsome profits that are far superior to highly salaried govt. officers. Aditya Kerketta has taken Agri-business as a challenge. He has set a goal of achieving Rs.15 Lakh annually in his 8 Acre horticulture farm in coming years. He is now very happy for his dignified life than his previous service job life.

We wish him and his family a bright and sustainable success future.

He has a total of 4 acres of land in which 2 Acres acres are barren land. Another two acres are fertile. Sanjay used to cultivate paddy crops there. Sometimes draught like precarious situation also happens. Since agriculture is the only source of income for them, they usually suffer a lot throughout the year. After the death of his father all responsibility has come to his shoulder as an elder brother of the family. So, he could not complete his basic education and compelled to leave school from class 8 in order to work and support financially for his family. Agriculture land was not too big to fulfill family’s requirements. So, he was thinking about migrating to other states for labour work. Many young men were migrating to other states for labour work as there were no local jobs. There was a time when Sanjay decided to go to work with them. But, after the inception of SGUP Organisations’s wadi project in the locality which gives a ray of hope to Sanjay to generate income out of his 4 acre land and get rid of thinking about migration plan.Just others in his village sanjay and his mother joined the wadi project. They selected 2 acres of barren land for gardening. However they never expected a healthy return from that land. But SGUP’s volunteers gave them advice and motivation. Sanjay planted 80 mango and 20 kaju trees. He followed sgup’s advice and took good care of his plants.
The organization facilitated water irrigation by digging deep bore well and providing pump sets. The organization created small groups and gave them seeds, farming machines etcetera.
Sanjay also started vegetable cultivation in his wadi. Good water irrigation system helped him in every season. In rainy season he cultivated a large amount of chili and made a good profit by selling it . In winter he cultivated potato, tomato, bringal. By selling vegetable he was earning 50000 per year. His family was getting enough amounts of pulses , millets and vegetables as food.

In the coming 1 or 2 years he is expecting more production. He is now taking care of his family and providing good education to his four brothers.
Sanjay says wadi gave him a purpose .without wadi he would have migrated to hydrabad or bengaluru. But now he is self sustained. The garden not only gives him income but also gives bravado. His self esteem is very high because of wadi.

Food preparation has been always woman’s responsibility to feed the family everyday. All headaches are handled by women such as what food to prepare, when to prepare, to whoom prepare, what quantity to prepare, etc. It is often more difficult for women in low income family to handle all these. She used to prepare food and collect all ingredients after her return from labour work which is very difficult and hectic. Initially as a new bride Basanti was facing a lot of problem, sometimes there were no vegetables for cooking. When she was pregnant Asha didi advises her to eat more fruits and vegetables but despite recommendations it was not possible for her to eat fruits and vegetables and forced to eat potato and pulses only due to food scarcity and economic conditions. They used to collect bamboo shoots mushrooms, roots and different food items and vegetables for cooking. They were getting adequate proteins and nutrients from the garden when they used to cultivate Pulses, Cashew nut (kaju), Vegetables, etc. Since they stopped cultivation due to various reasons they were depending on local market for food. Due to poor economic conditions they were unable to buy variety of vegetables. Rice and potatoes were their usual food items .
In the year 2011 under the SGUP Organisation’s Nabard Wadi project which has helped and influenced Basanti’ husband to join the project. Under the program they cultivated more than 200 Mango, Cashew nut (Kaju) tree initially in their 2 Acres land. Basanti was very happy to know about vegetables and fruits cultivation plan in their horticulture farm. Earlier they had no water irrigation systems and depend only on rain water. But after the Wadi project they are facilitated with deep borewell for irrigation. . High quality and latest vegetable seeds are also provided. All farmers of the village are started wadi farming. Basanti and her family were also started different vegetable cultivation. Basanti was focus on agriculture to feed her family whereas her husband and brother in-law were focusing on market oriented agriculture to sell items in the market. She has collected different vegetable seeds to fulfill her family’s food requirements. The ‘WADI’ plan has strengthened the natural living process of paudi bhuiyans

Case History Of paudi bhuiyan Lakhmidhar Giri

The paudibhuian tribe is a native tribe of Sundargarh. They are living in very remote jungles and they have their own way of life. Their livelihood depends on poduchasa, forest products and animal husbandry. Because they were living in very unapproachable place the government’s welfare schemes never reached them .so they were living a terrible life far from mainstream. The shrinking forest and government’s restriction on poduchasa created a huge crisis for them. Even the paudibhuian development organization failed to help them. So to solve this problem the government relocated them at khuntagan .the government provided them house, small amount of land, animals and seeds for farming. But some of them left the new colony and returned to the forest. Others stayed and worked as labors.
The government provided every family 1 to 2 acres of land .but the lands were 3 kilometers far from the village. So the villagers kept the lands’ as fallow.
The sgup organization planned to use those fallow lands as horticultural projects. The SGUP voluntary organization organized a general meeting with the people. They discussed all the problems the villagers are facing. The villagers came to know about NABARD’s Wadi Development Programme to be implemented by SGUP. The sgup team educated them on every aspects of wadi programme. They informedthem about The Wadi model, Water and Soil conservation, Fencing, Intercropping, Organic Farming, Local community building etcetera .it also helps to decrease climatic, biological and marketing risks. The people understood that they can grow fruit trees like cashews, mangoes, litchis etc with the agricultural crops for better profits and they can make 400 to 500 rupees daily by selling them on the local vegetable market. By participating in this wadi programme they can develop their livelihoods. 10 familis agreed to this plan .Lakhmidhar Giri is one one them.
Sixty years old laxmidhar was originally from marichiguda village. He has 1.53 dismil of land. But he left that land a fallow. Occasionally laxmidhar used to cultivate pulses but he couldn’t take care of them .so the animals were used to demolish them. His two sons worked as drivers and day labours. Under wadi project laxmidha planted 4 lichi and 25 mango trees in his one acre of land .with care and hard work those trees lived and grew. But one day some goats ate his trees in his absence. It saddened him, so to save his trees he built a small cabin near his farm and kept a couple of cows and bullocks.with the help of always available water irrigation he started vegetable and pulses cultivation. He and his wife lived there permanently.
After five years the trees are now fully grown .the mango and lichi trees are forming fruits. Two years ago he produced approximately 1 quintal of mango. He also has guava and cashew trees. By doing seasonal vegetable cultivation he is now earning 20 to 30 thousands per season .he has more than enough food to eat. He is also earning money by selling them. Laxmidhar says without the garden he would have depended on labor for living. By doing poduchasa they were earning 30 to 40 kinds of crops. But in the colony they did not do that .so in time they forgot about all the farming techniques. They ate the machine processed rice. But they did not have any other choice. He always yearned for his old lifestyle and natural food. At last the wadi project returned his happiness .he is getting fresh vegetables everyday. He is feeling free and happy while living in his cabin near his wadi.

We wish him and his family a bright and sustainable success future.

he could took good care of his fruits orchard as he stayed always in the watermelon field . Now the mango and cashew tree of his orchard are having very good growth with trunks and canopy. The trees ahs stated giving fruits last year he has got Rs5000/- by saling mango and cashew.
but now it is impossible to have watermelon in the orchard as the trees have become big so he has cultivated 5 acres land of neighboring field by taking lease land from the villagers. He has purchase all the equipments for cultivation and have a good fence around the field with his own savings. He will get abount 50 to 60 tones water melon if all the things goes right in the opinion of Asadhu he could have imagine to have such a cultivation in large scale due to the help of Wadi yojana for intercropping and orchad development. He could have darte to have cultivation due to the help os Wadi in the form of fencsing, water , seeds and other agriculture equipments.
